John Burroughs High Schools Instrumental Music Association Hosts 3rd Annual JBHS SCSBOA Solo & Ensemble Festival Feb. 11

On Saturday, February 11, 2012, the John Burroughs High School Instrumental Music Association (JBHS IMA) will present its 3rd Annual Solo and Ensemble Festival, with approximately 300 local middle school and high school student musicians expected to participate.

During the festival, which is free and open to the public, the student musicians will perform before a group of Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) adjudicators.

"We’re honored to again be able to host this Solo and Ensemble festival,” said Tana Barnett, director of bands, John Burroughs High School. “Events such as this are focused on providing a positive learning experience for students with lifelong educational benefits, and are a wonderful way to showcase and share with the community the many talented musicians, not only at John Burroughs High School, but also from other schools throughout the Southland."

A Command Performance Recital, beginning at 6:00 p.m. that day and also open to the public, will be given by all students earning a Command Performance rating who wish to take part. Students receiving a Superior rating for their performance become eligible to go on to compete at the regional festival taking place later this year. In past two years, over 50 JBHS musicians have been honored with Superior ratings at the festival.

The John Burroughs High School Instrumental Music Program aims to provide outstanding music education through the exploration of instrumental music performance in all of its genres. Upon graduation, students will be prepared to study music at the college level, become a vocational musician, and enjoy a lifetime of appreciation of all forms of music. The music program is made up of over 125 current JBHS students performing in four main groups: Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble. Additional groups include Chamber Ensembles, Honor Groups, Drum Line, Marching Band and Auxiliary. All groups are supported in combination by the Burbank Unified School District and the non-profit Instrumental Music Association.
