Emperor’s College of Traditional Oriental Medicine, one of the oldest and most distinguished acupuncture colleges in the nation, is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California. The partnership provides students in the master’s program at Emperor’s College the unique opportunity to complete clinical training at a state-of-the-art cancer center that combines the latest technology and most advanced treatments with a commitment to evidence-based, quality care for the whole patient - body, mind and spirit.
“Our students will gain hands-on experience in this state-of-the-art cancer center providing patients with traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture treatments in support of Western medical and surgical oncology therapies,” said Yun Kim, CEO at Emperor’s College. “Only a few centers across the country offer this kind of groundbreaking integrative medicine program, and we’re very excited about this partnership which will advance our commitment to fostering the integration of Oriental medicine in the modern health care system.”
Cancer patients at the Disney Family Cancer Center have access to a variety of complementary therapies such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, qi gong, meditation, and massage to support them through their conventional treatments. The first of its kind in the greater Los Angeles area, the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center is an innovative facility bringing together the full range of cancer diagnostics, treatment, and patient care using the most advanced technology in radiation oncology and providing personalized complementary therapies to aid in the healing process. The center’s integrative medical approach is also implemented in the facility’s pharmacy carrying both conventional and herbal medications.
“Continuous studies and clinical trials by the National Cancer Institute suggest that acupuncture helps relieve side effects caused by chemo and radiation,” said Dean Jacques MoraMarco, OMD, LAc, at Emperor’s College. “Through this externship, our students will gain valuable practical insight into comprehensive cancer treatment programs which will prepare them for clinical success and post-graduate specialization in oncology care.”
"The externship for Emperor’s College students is an opportunity for them to learn how to safely practice in a conventional medical environment and learn about some of the conventional treatments for cancer,” adds Lisa M. Schwartz, MD, medical director of the integrative medicine program at the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center. “This partnership also provides another low cost option for our cancer patients to receive acupuncture treatments."
